Saycoffee is trying to do so much for the environment, but they still use plastic? First of all we are constantly working to reduce our packaging and reduce its impact on theEarth's resources. But for now plastic is still the most sustainable alternative on the market for our instant coffee.
First of all we use rPET. rPET is the short name often used for Recycled Polyethylene Tetraphyte (rPET). PET, the world's fourth most common plastic resins is used in everything from food packaging to clothing. When you see "rPET" on a product it simply means that PET came from recycled pre-existing sources.
We use rPET in the instant coffee packaging as it is an excellent way to keep your beans fresh and creamy without losing their flavour. rPET is a tough, versatile plastic. Unlike many other plastics PET can be recycled and reused again! The real problem lies in products made for single use - either thrown the wrong place or recycled incorrectly.
These plastic jars from our instant coffee are great for storing dry ingredients such as lentils, rice, and more. After the product is used up you can use it again to store your home brewed jam or other goodies like seeds!
In addition to having the same benefits of virgin PET – rPET has many environmental gains:
Less energy consumption
Uses 79% less energy plus less water to produce than virgin PET
Reduction in transport
Reduces transport carbon emissions du to growing demand. There is also a more local and reliable supply of rPET, limiting the need to transport rPET internationally.
Less plastic in landfills
Less plastic going to landfill by recycling and stopping the material entering landfill which means no toxic chemicals are leaching into the groundwater
No new resources
Reducing the need to extract resources from the earth, using rPET offsets the need to create new PET
High demand = low prices
The consumer demand for recycled packaging has increased sales, and lowered costs through progressing the market of recycled materials
